Turbine technology is continuing to advance, resulting in more efficient, cost-effective and sustainable models. We’ll select a turbine after all investigations and assessments are complete.

We expect to use a turbine between 271 m and 350 m tall.

If the project is built to its full capacity of 2.2 GW, up to 150 of the smaller turbines or fewer larger turbines would be installed.

Learn what each part of a turbine does

Turbines would be installed on a foundation fixed to the seabed. For Star of the South a monopile foundation is proposed. This is the most commonly used foundation for offshore wind farms worldwide, and ideal for the ground conditions and water depths in this location.

Turbines will be fitted with marine and aviation safety lighting. Visualisations on this map show indicative lighting, pending the confirmation of lighting requirements from relevant authorities.

A system of substations and cables would transmit electricity from the turbines to a VicGrid connection hub.

From the connection hub, VicGrid will plan and deliver transmission infrastructure to connect offshore wind energy from multiple projects to the grid.

Project transmission infrastructure would include:

Array cables

Array cables connect turbines to each other and to offshore substations. They are buried in the seabed where possible. The route these cables take will depend on the final wind farm layout.

Offshore substation/s

Offshore substations collect and transform offshore wind energy to a higher voltage for transmission to shore. They sit on a platform around 30 m above the water and typically have one or more decks and electrical equipment. The number and location of substations will depend on the final project size, turbine type and wind farm layout.

Subsea export cables

High voltage subsea cables transfer electricity from the offshore substations to shore. They are buried in the seabed where possible. The route these cables take will depend on the final wind farm layout, marine environment study findings and seabed conditions.

Shore crossing

The shore crossing is where the subsea export cables connect with underground export cables on land.

We’ll do this using a no-trenching construction method – to minimise disturbance to the shallow marine, beach and dune areas.

Underground export cables

Underground export cables transfer electricity between the subsea export cables and an onshore substation.

The cables would be installed underground.

Onshore substation

The onshore substation is located above ground. It contains the electrical equipment needed to connect the wind farm to the grid. The substation is expected to be located near the VicGrid connection hub.
